In times of sadness and distress, it can be very reassuring to read a Bible verse that promises comfort and strength. I’ve been inspired by a number of passages over the years, but here are 33 helpful Bible verses for comfort and spiritual strength.

Bible Verse for comfort and strength (KJV)

You’re not alone if you feel like you need comfort right now. You might be in the middle of a divorce, worried about an illness, or uncertain about the future. There are times when we feel like we’re hanging onto God and don’t know how we can keep doing it. It’s in these moments that you need to know that God understands your pain, even if He hasn’t shared it Himself, and will give you strength to persevere through any difficulty if you turn to Him for comfort and strength.

1 Corinthians 16:13 – Stand fast in faith.

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
1 Corinthians 16:13
1 Corinthians 16_13 - Stand Fast In Faith

Paul tells the Corinthians to be watchful or to stay on their guard, along with the command to stand firm in the faith. He urges them to be on guard and stand firm in the faith, likely against false teachers.

He encouraged them to be strong but also do everything in love. Christians should strive to have the image of a soldier on the verge of a battle against the Devil. They should be alert to various dangers, be steadfast in their faith, act like an adult, and have a strong will so they can remain pure in the faith.

Do not let yourself become corrupted by the ways of the world. Continue to believe in the Scriptures which Paul had taught them about their salvation. Have a strong will to oppose people who try to corrupt or divide you.

Psalm 27:14 –  Be of good courage

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Psalm 27:14
Psalm 27_14 -  Be Of Good Courage
Rather than succumbing to fear, David chose to trust God and remembered God’s ability to provide comfort, strength, and protection.
Wherever the believer is, he can find a way to the throne of grace by prayer. There is nothing like the believing hope of eternal life, the foresight of that glory, and foretastes of those pleasures, to keep us from fainting under all calamities.
In the meantime we should be strengthened that Jesus suffered for us and pray in faith, not to be delivered into the hands of our enemies. Be encouraged to wait on the Lord, with patient expectation, and fervent prayer.

Proverbs 28:1 – Courage in the face of fear.

The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.
Proverbs 28:1
Proverbs 28_1 - Courage In The Face Of Fear
Being brave means stepping forward with courage in the face of fear. Being bold is the opposite of running away when no one is chasing you. Being brave means doing things despite challenges and risks.
Look at all the examples in Scripture of people who bravely followed God in the face of fear. When we wait for him, he will surely renew our strength according to his word.
Every time our power is exhausted and not renewed, we get tired. Tiredness greatly increases the effort required to complete simple tasks, so we tend to faint or give up. Hope automatically arises when you begin to understand how great, strong, and capable God is.

1 Chronicle 28:20 – Finding Strenght in the face of trials.

And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
1 Chronicles 28:20
1 Chronicle 28_20 - Finding Strenght In The Face Of Trials
Here David repeats God’s admonition to Joshua before leading God’s people to the Promised Land. This was appropriate as Moses was a great leader and could only lead the people of Israel to where he stopped and left the rest to Joshua.
Don’t be disappointed for God helps you. God, who owned our ancestors and gave birth to them through the work of their age, will not forsake us so long as he has work to do in or through us. Good work can continue if all involved are proactive.
David encouraged Solomon to serve God with both heart and mind. Only a faithful Heart who is willing will Serve God.

John 16:33 – Overcoming with peace and purpose.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33
John 16_33 - Overcoming With Peace And Purpose
In life, we may have to deal with illness, tragedy, natural disasters, and trials of malice. Yet, as Christians, we can overcome all things with peace and purpose.
The life that God calls us is wonderful because Jesus conquered the world. We live in increasingly dangerous times, but the Lord loves us and cares about us. He is always on our side when we do what is right.
We live in a dangerous and unpredictable world, but our souls are so firmly anchored in the Lord that we can still find joy, comfort, and strength. This is our hope in the midst of trials and difficulties. God gives us the Spirit and strength to overcome sin and obey His Word.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust, Prayers, and Believing in God.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Proverbs 3_5-6 - Trust, Prayers, And Believing In God
To trust is to believe or to rely on someone absolutely. This means that anyone you trust must be someone who cannot fail.
Always include God in everything you do and give Him a chance to guide you on the right path. We don’t always know what lies ahead. He tells us not to worry, to pray, and he will give us the peace you can’t even imagine.
Pray and ask God, to give you the power to love you to the fullest of your potential. The promise found in God’s Word is full of promises that teach us to trust Him in difficult times.

Psalm 31:24 – Reasons to hope in God.

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
Psalm 31:24
Psalm 31_24 - Reasons To Hope In God
David refers to God in the psalm as his “rock” and “fortress” because it protects him from harm. David also mentions that those who have hope in the Lord will receive courage, comfort, and strength.
Let go of what you believe you can or cannot do, as well as who you are, who you were, and who you are afraid to be, and allow your heart—your true self—to muster the courage to do so.
The knowledge of His presence ought to inspire us with courage and assurance that enables us to face any dangers or difficulties that might prevent us from following Him.

Philippians 4:13 – Can you do all things?

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Philippians 4:13
Philippians 4_13 - Can You Do All Things
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” is one of the most well-known bible verses that is frequently quoted. There are many scripture passages that people choose to live by and never forget.
It is crucial to rely on God’s strength however, this is not a guarantee that you will succeed in everything you try. Instead, it is encouraging that we are able to maintain our composure under all conditions because our hope and source of joy are our Savior who never changes.

Mark 5:36 – Only Believe.

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
Mark 5:36
Mark 5_36 - Only Believe
To be wise, according to Solomon, you must fear the LORD, and to fear the LORD in the manner for which He is to be feared, you must have knowledge of Him. He walks by our side when we fully rely on Him.

Every person is capable of experiencing emotions. Nobody among us is exempt from experiencing emotions. God has endowed us with the ability to experience emotions such as joy, sorrow, happiness, gladness, fear, worry, and so forth.

Many people have experienced and continue to experience fear as a barrier, particularly fear of the unknown or the unseen. In all situations, we should show faith and not fear.

Isaiah 41:10 – Fear is not an option.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 41:10
Isaiah 41_10 - Fear Is Not An Option

God comforts and gives us strength in this passage by assuring us that He will always be by our side. He exhorts us not to be afraid, for He will uphold us with His just right hand, giving us the strength to stand our ground.

But let us never forget that the Creator of the Universe is the one who reassures His followers that they need not be alarmed because He is able to calm the furious storm and mend broken hearts.

He is the one who warns us not to worry and gives us the order not to worry about bad people. He invites us to do so because He promises to take care of all our worries.

Ephesians 6:10-12 – The need to know the word of God.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:10-12
God is able to compensate for any shortcomings we may have because He is perfect in every way. When he was at his most vulnerable and unable to fight in his own strength, he knew that he could “be strong in the Lord and in the might of his might.”
We frequently fail and grow weary, unable to bear the burden when we attempt to overcome challenges in our own strength. But this passage exhorts us not to be afraid, for He will uphold us with His just right hand, giving us the strength to stand our ground. He commands us to put our trust in Him.

Bible verse for comfort and strength during death.

The Bible contains many verses that we can use to comfort ourselves in times of grief and loss. The death of a loved one is often difficult to deal with, but there are passages in the Bible that will help us through our grief, and you can use these to help yourself understand just how much God loves us.

Romans 8:18

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Romans 8:18

Since everyone who is in Christ is an heir to God’s kingdom along with Christ, we are meant to understand that our present sufferings are not worth the Joy that comes when God is glorified in our lives.

We should cling to the Lord during difficult times, pleading with Him in prayers and petitions, and staying very close to the protection of His wings.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

This demonstrates to the Corinthians how Paul’s pain and the consolation he experienced from God during it were for their good. They endured severe suffering that put them both on the verge of death and was freed by the God who raises the dead.

We are urged to lift our eyes and fix our gaze on Jesus and “the glory that is to be revealed to us,” rather than remaining focused on what suffering in this world is doing to us.

When we go through the pain of any kind—pain from loss to regret to sadness—our God is there with us. He not only stands by us but also makes a promise to give us the solace we require in times of adversity.

Psalm 119:50

“My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.”

Psalm 119:50

God is aware of our desire to be seen and to experience empathy and care from others. God cares about the struggles we face.

He does not discount our current situation or downplay the importance of the stresses we face every day.

He is concerned about us and by our sides through every high and low. He is with us in everything.

Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Matthew 5:4

Losses happen to all of us, yet our hearts resist accepting them and we sometimes feel betrayed and helpless.

God favors individuals with compassionate hearts. When someone is in grief, it’s better to listen, wait, try to understand, and offer support as they go through their journey.

When we get close to God, he comforts us in our sorrow. And we get closer to God through praying, reading the Bible, and reflecting on the verses.

Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

When one is brokenhearted and crushed it means they are at their lowest God is with the brokenhearted, and when we reject him, God may also feel brokenhearted.

Nothing we go through hasn’t been experienced by God in the human life that He lived as Jesus.

The Psalmist wants to let the righteous who are suffering know that God will be near them and deliver them, just as Jesus gives hope to the “poor in spirit.”

During our trials, the Lord will step in and provide us with what we need to get by.

Revelation 21:4

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

The Lord says that mourning will last for one night as they would pass away. Christians are aware that along with blessings and comfort, life also brings tribulation and difficulty.

Life will always be filled with suffering and sadness. Even Job, a man who was righteous in God’s eyes, went through personal suffering. He nonetheless held fast to his faith in the Lord and the knowledge that he would ultimately be raised to life and see his Savior on earth.

God will wipe away every tear because He knows the depths of every agonizing pain and every broken heart.

Romans 8:28

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28

This reassuring chapter serves as a reminder that because we are in Christ, we are free from the curse of the law, slavery to sin, and the accusations of Satan.

We are also free from God’s judgment and condemnation. Because Christ has won the victory on our behalf—by grace through faith in Him—we are being ransomed from death and destruction, and we are being rescued from defeat and decay.

But for a brief period of time, we are afflicted by the effects of sin because we live in a fallen world. Our heavenly Father also groans in His Spirit at the evil that has befallen His perfect creation and gives us strength and comfort to overcome.

John 11:26

“Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:26

Although Lazarus had already passed away by the time Jesus learned of his condition, He still waited two more days before visiting the family.

Martha seems dejected and resigned at the same time. She is sure that her brother will experience an everlasting resurrection.

Those who put their faith in Christ have a life that is eternal and continues after the death of the physical body. He had previously demonstrated his identity as the resurrection; now he demonstrates his identity as the life.

He claims that anyone who accepts and embraces him as the true Messiah and Savior of the world and commits himself and all of his soul’s cares to him will live forever and lead a natural life.

Romans 6:8-10

“But if we died with Christ, we have faith that we will also live with him. We know that Christ has been raised from the dead and he will never die again. Death no longer has power over him. He died to sin once and for all with his death, but he lives for God with his life.”

Romans 6:8-10

The most exciting doctrine for a Christian is identification with Christ’s suffering and death. In addition to paying the payment for our sins, Christ also died to sin. His death severed our connection to sin, allowing us to experience a fresh lease on life.

Although we must daily bear our cross and endure suffering for our faith, we have already conquered sin when Christ died for us; now we must daily live for Christ.

The power of sin was broken once we were united to Christ by faith because we were then identified with His death, which shattered the power of sin in our life.

John 5:24

“I assure you that whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and won’t come under judgment but has passed from death into life.”

John 5:24

Jesus detailed His special relationship with the Father to His followers. He described their shared love for one another.

He said that His entire existence had been dedicated to carrying out the Father’s will in the power of the Spirit in order to please the Father and that He had only ever said and done what He had been told to do by the Father.

Jesus has assured us that as far as we believe his word we would experience eternal life after death and we won’t be judged or suffer condemnation.

1 Corinthians 15:53-55

“It’s necessary for this rotting body to be clothed with what can’t decay, and for the body that is dying to be clothed in what can’t die. And when the rotting body has been clothed in what can’t decay, and the dying body has been clothed in what can’t die, then this statement in scripture will happen: Death has been swallowed up by a victory. Where is your sting, Death?”

1 Corinthians 15:53-55

When the scriptures are finally fulfilled, we could be at the place where our Lord will deliver his raised saints and will never experience death or perish.

We should seek the complete certainty of faith and hope, knowing that while our bodies will be there sleeping, our souls will be with the Redeemer in the meantime.

Death gains all of its cruel power from sin. Sin is the source of death’s sting, but by dying, Christ removed this sting, atoning for sin and obtaining forgiveness of death’s penalty.

Bible Verses On Strength

Bible verse for comfort and strength when someone dies

When we experience the death of someone close to us, it’s easy to lose hope and fall into despair. That’s because we humans crave stability and security, and when those things seem out of reach, we tend to flail wildly until we find an anchor of some kind. For many people, the idea of turning to God in times of uncertainty makes them uneasy, because they don’t understand what He can possibly do for them or why He would want to do anything at all.

Romans 14:8

“If we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to God.”

Romans 14:8

Jesus is our Lord, our God, and our Savior. Jesus saved us by grace, and salvation—which translates to eternal life and all of its advantages—is His gift of grace to everyone who places their confidence in Him and follows Him.

As believers, we should be living for the Lord, live to please our Savior for the honor of His name and to the glory of God. He paid the price for us with His own life. Everyone ought to follow their moral convictions and serve the Lord by doing so.

Ecclesiastes 12:7

“Before dust returns to the earth as it was before and the life-breath returns to God who gave it.”

Ecclesiastes 12:7

We ought to reflect on the wrongs we’ve done to our Creator, confess, and ask for pardon. We should be mindful of our obligations and go about doing them while seeking his grace and strength.

It is very difficult to believe a man is sincere when he refuses to give up sin and worldly gratification until he is forced to admit that he has no pleasure in them.

The law is the power of sin. No one is able to comply with its requirements, bear its curse, or atone for his own transgressions.  A believer can never be taken by death because they would resurrect and live with God in eternity forever.

Luke 23:43

“Jesus replied, ‘I assure you that today you will be with me in paradise.’”

Luke 23:43

When Christ was nailed to the cross, he prayed for his executioners. The amazing thing Jesus paid the ultimate price for and secured for us is the pardon of our sins.

In the two thieves between whom Jesus was crucified depicted the various consequences, the gospel message will have on the children of men. One criminal had become unbreakable while the other was finally softened

This should discourage anyone from delaying repentance till their deathbeds or from hoping that they will do it at that time.

2 Corinthians 5:6-8

“So we are always confident, because we know that while we are living in the body, we are away from our home with the Lord. We live by faith and not by sight. We are confident, and we would prefer to leave the body and to be at home with the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 5:6-8

Any sorrow we endure in our perishable bodies during this life is insignificant to the glory of eternity with Christ.

Paul yearns to live in his immortal body, which is compared to an eternal home created by God. Paul has the bravery to continue the mission to spread the gospel in the face of impending pain while knowing that.

He is aware that everyone who professes faith in Christ will stand before Christ’s judgment, not to determine their everlasting destiny but rather to be compensated for the good deeds we committed while we were in our mortal bodies.

Ezekiel 18:32

“I most certainly don’t want anyone to die! This is what the Lord God says. Change your ways, and live!”

Ezekiel 18:32

This scripture is an appeal to repent and obtain a new heart and spirit. God does not provide orders that cannot be carried out; instead, he advises us to take action in our control and to ask for help with the rest.

For individuals who desire this change to occur, God has set ordinances and means, given instructions, and made promises.

He has said that to avoid spiritual death we should be renewed in our minds and change our evil ways then he will hear from heaven and show us forgiveness

Psalm 107:13-14

“So they cried out to the Lord in their distress, and God saved them from their desperate circumstances. God brought them out from the darkness and deep gloom; he shattered their chains.”

Psalm 107:13-14

This represents the sinner’s release from a much harsher form of imprisonment. The repentant sinner recognizes his pain and guilt.

He is pardoned for his sin by a gracious God, who also grants him freedom from the grip of sin and Satan as well as the sanctifying and consoling effects of the Holy Spirit.

We died in Christ when He died, so we should regard ourselves as having died to sin. He shared our humanity when He died in our place, allowing us to share His resurrection-life identity.

Romans 6:5

“If we were united together in a death like his, we will also be united together in a resurrection like his.”

Romans 6:5

When we sin we spiritually perish our sin. Then, we were raised in a brand-new spiritual life.

Paul now urges us to keep in mind the fact that we are no longer under the control of sin. Paul yearned for a close relationship with the Lord Who purchased him and he yearned to know Christ and the power of His resurrection, but he also yearned to share in Christ’s suffering.

Paul understood the value of having a strong relationship with the Lord Jesus because, through trust in His atoning death on our behalf, we were placed in Him and made eternally one with Him via His death.

Matthew 4:16

“The people who lived in the dark have seen a great light, and a light has come upon those who lived in the region and in shadow of death.”

Matthew 4:16

God has the right to withhold the gospel and the instruments of grace from those who treat them poorly and push them aside.

Wherever he is not welcome, Christ won’t stay for very long. Without Christ, people are in the dark.

When the gospel arrives, the light follows; it brings the day to any location and any soul it touches. The gospel-correct doctrine is the doctrine of repentance.

Psalm 23:4

“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger because you are with me. Your rod and your staff — they protect me.”

Psalm 23:4

This Psalm, which has held such significance for so many people, continues to have a profound influence on everyone who comprehends and applies its lessons to their own lives.

For those who follow the Good Shepherd, who sacrificed his life for His sheep, the valley of the shadow of death becomes the route to life and peace.

The Son of Righteousness illuminates the way of all who have turned into sons of light, flooding the valley of profound darkness and despair with light and hope.

And as we proceed along the course that God has planned for us in life, let us put our faith in Him in the face of any setbacks and difficulties we may encounter.

John 3:16-17

“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him won’t perish but will have eternal life. God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”

John 3:16-17

If you believe that God sacrificed his son, Jesus, for the sins of mankind, your soul will be saved. We need new values, new affections, and new goals. We were corrupt and sin-shaped at birth, therefore we needed to be transformed into new beings.

We have been ushered into new birth which is a gift from heaven. According to this Chapter , this new birth has a predisposition to ascend to heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit, there has been a significant change in a sinner’s heart.

Luke 1:78-79

“Because of our God’s deep compassion, the dawn from heaven will break upon us, to give light to those who are sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide us on the path of peace.”

Luke 1:78-79

The Light of redemption, which had been promised in the garden of Eden long ago.

For many generations, Israel had been in a miserable state of spiritual darkness, but at last the people who had been walking in darkness were to see a bright Light, and the radiance of God was finally dawning on those who were living in the land of the shadow of death.

Only the face of the Lord Jesus can reveal the illuminating understanding of God’s splendor.
