The Purpose of a Woman in the Bible

The Purpose of a Woman in the Bible

God did not end His creation without creating women (Genesis 2:22). Women are a powerful source in society; the world would not exist today without them.

Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

~ Genesis 2:22

We all know that God created women for numerous reasons, and in this post, we will discuss women’s purpose in the Bible.

The Purpose of a Woman in the Bible

The purpose of a woman is to be a helpmate and companion to a man. She is to love him and respect him as he loves and respects her. She is to be submissive to him in all things and to make sure that she never puts herself before him or her needs above his.

As a woman, she has specific duties that she must perform such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children while her husband works hard to provide for them. She must also stay at home when needed in order to take care of the family while he is away working or serving God (1 Timothy 5:14).

The Bible gives us examples of women who have served God faithfully even though they were going against society’s expectations for women at that time.

Deborah

6 She sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor. 7 I will lead Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and give him into your hands.’”

8 Barak said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.”

9 “Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.

~ Judges 4:6-9

One example would be Deborah who God called to lead Israel during a time when there was no king (Judges 4:4-5). She could use her influence over Barak so that he would go into battle against Sisera.

Ruth

16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”

~ Ruth 1:16-17

Ruth is a book of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament, that is named after the central figure of the book. In the narrative, Ruth’s story begins in Moab, where she meets Boaz, who takes her to his home country of Judah and marries her. Ruth becomes connected to King David and Jesus Christ by virtue of being an ancestor of David.

Ruth was one of several women who experienced hardship yet still found happiness in life. These women include Sarah, Rebekah (wife of Isaac), Rachel (wife of Jacob), Tamar (daughter-in-law of Judah), Bathsheba (wife of Uriah), and Esther (Queen).

We are going to look at the purpose of the woman according to the Bible as it concerns the topics listed below;

  • The Purpose Of Women In The Family
  • The Purpose Of Women In The Church
  • The Purpose Of Women In The Society

So without further ado, let’s get started!

Purpose Of Women In The Family

Women Are To Serve As Help Meet. After God formed man from the dust and told him to dress the garden, he saw that man should not be alone.

Despite all the animals and creatures available, Adam was lonely as they did fit as a good partner for him.

So God caused him to fall into a deep sleep, made a woman out of him, presented her to him, and declared that they were one (Genesis 2).

This is why every man must cleave with a woman because he is not complete alone (v.24).

1 Corinthians 11:9 cited that women were made for men. Other scriptures congratulate a man who has found a wife for himself (Proverbs 18:22) as finding a good thing.

A wife is to serve as a crown to her husband, assisting him in his endeavors, showering him with love and support, and bringing glory to him (Proverbs 12:4).

God knew that man could not live alone, and it didn’t take long after Eve was created for us to understand why.

1. Women Are To Bear Children And Multiply

A man cannot impregnate himself or bear kids. He needs a woman for that to happen.

Adam cannot multiply without Eve, and God knows that too, so He created with an additional purpose: To bear fruits and fill the earth.

In Genesis 1:28, 9:7, and Psalm 128:3, God made it clear that he has blessed women to be fruitful, and their seeds shall multiply.

Even in these modern times, there are stigmas associated with barren women; while this should not be, it proves that one purpose of a woman is to give birth, or else there will be no six continents.

2. Women Are To Take Care Of The Home

No creature on earth can love more than a woman – or a mother. Mothers are the best!

In Proverbs 31:10-31, The Bible accurately describes how a wife is not only a helpmeet for her husband but also a household messiah.

The chapter makes us understand that a woman should do her duties with love and passion, build her home, and watch over the affairs of her household.

  • She cooks, goes to the market, cleans the house, and watches over the affairs of her household.
  • She cooks, goes to the market, cleans the house, ensures it is well lit at night, helps her husband look for a good business deal and secure it, and brings good to the family.

While a man can do these things, a woman does it better!

They were made for it. Proverbs 14:1 goes further to say that the wisest of women do build their homes with love and diligence, while the foolish ones neglect their duties and tear them down.

Purpose Of Women In The Church

Women Are To Teach The Younger Women And Encourage Each Other. As iron shapes iron, so does one person sharpen another (Proverbs 27:17).

Women have always been active in church activities, from the time of Christ to the early church and today’s Christianity.

Since we are now a part of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27), we should (as a purpose) seek to edify the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12-27).

As for women, one way to fulfill this purpose is to enlighten themselves in their women’s ministry.

Apostle Paul admonished older women to teach the younger women the way of the Lord Christ and not to depart from the faith (Titus 2:4-5), women should share their life experiences with other women (Galatians 6:2), and develop a strong bond of life among themselves.

This way, they fulfill their purpose of edifying the body of Christ.

1. Women Are To Engage In Charity Work

Christ came into this world to do good all around; as Christians, we should imitate that. In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus clarified that whatever we do to the needy, we do it to him.

And that if we don’t, we stand to neglect our calling and duties, which has serious consequences.

Women like Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of James, Salome, Joannah, Susanna, and Dorcas, were known for their charitable works in the ministry of Christ (John 4:4-30, Acts 9:36).

They cared and gave to the needy, and all women are encouraged to follow these good works (Ephesians 2:10).

Christian women are also encouraged not to get tired of doing good (Galatians 6:9).

Women Are To Teach Their Children In The Way Of The Lord

A child today is God’s General tomorrow. While it isn’t the duty of parents to nurture their children in the lord’s way, women can play this role more than their male counterparts.

It has been scientifically proven that children are closer to their mum than their dad by up to 40 percent.

As a Christian woman, you should take advantage of this and make training your child in God’s way a significant purpose of your existence( Proverbs 22:6).

Timothy was privileged to have been familiar with the scriptures from his childhood (1 Timothy 3:25), thanks to Eunice and Lois, his mother and grandmother, respectively.

Today, Timothy is known as one of the significant believers in the early church, and this could be your child as well.

The Purpose Of Women In The Society

Women Are To Serves In Leadership Office. Women are not to be overlooked in leadership roles in society.

In the Bible, all the godly women leaders that led Israel were successful. For instance, the Prophetess and Judge Deborah led Israel for 40 years. She was responsible for leading the Israelite armies to victory in a war over their Canaanite oppressors (Judge 4, 5).

She served as Chief Judge for the whole nation of Israel.

Queen Esther as well, led Israel from becoming extinct. She effectively utilized her office as a queen in Persia to save her people and bring their enemies to doom (Book of Esther).

There is something about women who are leaders.

They are better thinkers and idea generators, and they are better emotionally intelligent and empathetic; they are better team players, capable of making bold and wise decisions, managing finances better, and ensuring success overall.

With all these natural soft skills, we know that leadership is also one of the purposes of women, according to the Bible.

Bottom Line

We can’t do without women; the earth shall exist because of them. The purpose of women is not only crucial in society; they significantly impact their church and family.

Finally, women should serve their purpose with love and passion because God has commanded them to, and we also need them.

No one does it better than Mama.
