19 Bible Verses on Women’s Leadership: Deborah & Scripture to Stand On

Bible Verses on Women's Leadership

Bible verses on women’s leadership are inspired by the leadership style of Deborah, who became a singular biblical figure: a female military leader. It is hard to imagine the Bible without women leaders. The Bible has many stories of godly and courageous females who God chose to lead in his name. One such example is Deborah, a judge in ancient Israel and the only female Judge mentioned in the Bible.

Deborah’s story begins when her people called upon her for help against their oppressors: “they would not listen when she spoke to them; so she placed herself at the head of one hundred men.” She succeeded where others failed, leading an army that defeated Jabin, king of Hazor, and saved Israel from destruction (Judges 4)

Women can also be found in more subtle leadership roles throughout scripture.

This post is focused on Bible verses that speak to women and their leadership skills, as well as those that encourage them to be leaders in their lives.

Bible Verses on Women’s Leadership.

This section will find a list of Bible verses on women’s leadership in different areas. The verses mentioned are those that I feel are the most significant and beneficial to women.

1 Timothy 2:12 – Women and authority.

I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

Timothy 2:12

1 Timothy 2-12 - Women and authority.

The passage we’re considering today is a potent reminder that women are not to teach or be teachers in the Church. This is addressed in some different ways throughout the new testament. The first, referenced above, is through Paul’s instructions to Timothy.

In addition, other passages address women as leaders in the Church, such as 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:12-14. In these passages, we see a distinction between men and women who are leaders in the Church. We see that women are allowed to teach but only under certain conditions (1 Timothy 2:11-15). We also see that there may be no leadership roles for women if there is already an example of leadership for both men and women.

Galatians 3:28 – One in Christ Jesus.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:28

Galatians 3-28 - One in Christ Jesus.

When everyone is equal, there is no room for maltreatment or victimizing; that’s why the Lord God places everyone to be identical. The Bible lets us know that we are all one in Christ, male and female, no tribe differences, no servant or head; all of us are equal. This gives room for both genders to lead where necessary.

1 Corinthians 14:35 – Controversy about women’s leadership in the Church.

If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

1 Corinthians 14:35

1 Corinthians 14-35 - Controversy about women's leadership in the Church.

The controversy about women’s leadership in the Church is an issue that has been debated for years.

The Bible does not explicitly state that women cannot be leaders; it only says they are to lead in their and husbands’ spheres. However, no scriptural passage states that a woman cannot be a leader or give direction to the men in her life.

Some people believe that it is because of the culture of men and women in the early Church that women were not allowed to lead. They think that because of this culture, God did not want women to have any authority over men because it would have caused problems and controversy.

Acts 18:26 – leadership in God’s vineyard.

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

Acts 18:26

Acts 18-26 - leadership in God's vineyard.

These two women, Priscilla and Aquila, taught  Apollos the way of the Lord. The women didn’t treat Apollos with disdain but instead took him and explained everything accurately to his understanding.

This shows us that women have a significant role in God’s vineyard. They have a greater chance of winning the soul of winning Chris and teaching the teaching theme and endurance.

1 Timothy 2:11-12 – Exercising authority.

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

1 Timothy 2:11-12

1 Timothy 2-11-12 - Exercising authority.

Timothy explained that a woman should always learn in silence and submission. This is because a man was created first before a woman, and in every family, the firstborn deserves all the respect; as such, a woman has to give the man all the care. Therefore, she is to be submissive to a man as the higher authority and learn with humility, not timidity.

Acts 21:9 – Submissive women leaders.

He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied.

Acts 21:9

Acts 21-9 - Submissive women leaders.

This scripture talks about the journey of Paul and other Apostles in spreading the Gospel, they meet four daughters of a Man who were virgins, and they prophesy the way of the Lord. A woman is submissive and is not competing with a man, and she will see  Revelation from God. The Virgin ladies in Paul’s story prophesied because they were humble and were always ready to learn.

1 Peter 3:7 – Support and understanding.

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

1 Peter 3:7

1 Peter 3-7 - Support and understanding.

Deborah, a Mighty Warrior who led the children of Israel in war, had the support of her husband. Husbands must love their wives and as well understand their ways. When you love your wife, everything becomes easy for you in all forms.

James 1:22-25 – Learning in the scripture.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

James 1:22-25

James 1-22-25 - Women leaders should be submissive.

This Bible verse shows us always to do what we hear and learn in the scripture, all the laws of women being submissive, humble, and husbands loving and understanding their wives. We must not only hear or read, but we should put them into practice. If we put all these words into practice, we will see the ways of God opening for us.

Luke 2:36-38 – Humility.

And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Luke 2:36-38

Luke 2-36-38 - Humility.

This Bible verse shows how humble Prophetess Anna was, and she always stayed humble to her husband until she became a widow. She never ceases to thank- Debo God for everything he has done for her and everyone.

Isaiah 3:12 – Deborah as a woman leader.

As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.”

Isaiah 3:12

Isaiah 3-12 - Deborah as a woman leader.

This Bible verse shows Isaiah’s Anger when the men of Israel sinned against God and didn’t consider their position as men in the face of God. Isaiah stated how women ruled over the men because they didn’t value their work.

A woman can lead ideally where a man failed, just as Deborah, who led the men of Israel to war, and they won. Many women in the Bible take men’s position and do the will of God with all amounts of humility and sincerity.

Bible verses for women’s groups.

Women’s Bible studies are a great way to get information, fellowship, and encourage women. Women gather to hear Bible studies in scripture and have personal time to relate with each other.

The Bible contains many verses for women’s groups, which can help you make the right decision regarding women’s leadership. In addition, it will help you feel comfortable and confident while leading your circle.

Philippians 2:3

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves…

Philippians 2:3

This Bible verse shows that women should always work with one mind to achieve their goals, not disdaining one another. They are advised to see one another as important as themselves. Most important, they must be humble because humility conquers everything.

Luke 6:31

“Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.

Luke 6:31

For any group to grow, there must be sincerity, and women must learn to treat others as themselves so that they can grow. If you want to be treated with respect, respect others first, you want to be treated well with goodness.

This Bible verse encourages women to be one, to do what they feel is suitable for themselves with one another.

Matthew 20:26

“It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant…

Matthew 20:26

Jesus in the Bible didn’t lead his disciples with pride; he was humble and down to earth; he even humbled himself to wash their feet. This shows all the women that they must first be servants if they want to be great. Then, they must emulate Jesus’ Steps in humility.

Proverbs 11:14

Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory.

Proverbs 11:14

This Bible verse makes us understand that every women’s gospels follow God’s will for success. Therefore, women must be led and be in a group of God’s will, have each other’s back and be victorious together.

Psalms 78:72

So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.

Psalms 78:72

This portion shows us that God guides us with his hands perfectly and extends his skillful hands toward us. It, therefore, means that in every group women have, it must be for something tangible to propagate the Gospel and help each other’s spiritual lives as Christ did.

Women can gather and organize skills acquisition for each other, help solve problems, and amend each other’s mistakes as Christ did.

Proverbs 29:2

When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, But when a wicked man rules, people groan.

Proverbs 29:2

This Bible portion shows that when wrongdoings increase in the World, it will affect the people negatively, but if the right people rule, they will always be happy. This shows that women are the builders of society. When one woman succeeds, it becomes an added advantage to the World.

When women gather positively and organize what will benefit the people, the people indeed get happy and have reasons to smile. But when women gather for the wrong purpose, it affects society. So this shows that women need to collect for a better sense to continuously improve the world.

Exodus 18:21

Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.

Exodus 18:21

When the Bible talks about Man, it includes Women as well, and this shows that women shouldn’t be found in evil vices such as dishonesty, hatred, etc. This shows us that when women are honest and truthful, they will rule as leaders over thousands of people.

Luke 22:26

But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.

Luke 22:26

This portion talks about submission; for a woman to lead, she must be down to earth and ready to learn. A woman who is humble and submissive to her husband controls the man unknowingly. Just as Christ was humble to his disciples, Women must also have and exhibit humility to be able to lead.

Proverbs 29:14

If a king judges the poor with truth, His throne will be established forever.

Proverbs 29:14

This Bible verse shows that women must always accept and tell the truth. A truthful leader rules over the people, but a deceitful leader loses the trust of his people. On the other hand, an honest woman leads her people successfully; just like Deborah, she doesn’t like to gain concern from her people.

Women should always tell the truth no matter the circumstances.
