  1. 1 Corinthians 4:12-13 (AMP)

We work [for our living], working hard with our own hands. When we are reviled and verbally abused, we bless. When we are persecuted, we take it patiently and endure. When we are slandered, we try to be conciliatory and answer softly. We have become like the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

Paul is portraying the arduous life of struggle that comes with becoming an apostle for Christ. Not only are they considered stupid and have no respect in the eyes of the public, but they also live with hunger, thirst, filthy clothing, beatings, and no place to call home.

Now Paul adds that it is even important for them to pay for themselves by performing additional physical labor jobs on the side. The Corinthians would recall Paul working as a tentmaker with his own hands when he was with them. That’s when he met and collaborated with Priscilla and Aquila in tent-building and the ministry of drawing people to Christ.

    I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.
